Tirupati, is a well known devotional town in southeast of Andhra Pradesh, South India. It stands about 13 km northeast of Chandragiri in the Palkonda Hills and 108 km northwest of Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu. The abode of the Hindu god Venkateshvara, Lord of the Seven Hills, is known as Tirupati. In Sri Venkateshwara Sanctuary and National Park, the holy hill of Tirumala is located about 6 miles (10 km) northwest of Tirupati. The hill was deemed so sacred that it was not authorised to be climbed by non-Hindus before 1870. A temple of great antiquity stands at the summit of the plateau, at an elevation of 2,800 feet (850 metres). A fine example of Dravidian architecture, the temple, nestled amid holy waterfalls and tanks (reservoirs) and dedicated to Venkateshvara, is one of the most important pilgrimage centres in India. Tirupati is in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district, India. At the peak of the Tirumala hills is the temple, while the town is in the foothills.
